The Pros and Cons of Gene Alteration Essay - 2344 Words
The Pros and Cons of Gene Alteration Abstract A new epidemic in human reproduction is slowly sweeping the earth, and it is known as human gene alteration. It gives parents the ability to decide their babies sex, hair color, or even eye color. Creating these so called designer babies seems like the perfect way to have the child you have always dreamed of. But is this a moral way to go about reproduction? Is it fair to these children to mess with their genes just for your own satisfaction of having the perfect baby? Gene alteration can also be used in other more beneficial ways. One being to prevent and weed out disease that effects an unborn child. Gene alteration can be very beneficial, but only if used in the right way such asâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This method enables the parents of a fetus to pretty much control everything that goes on in a babys development in the womb. Gene alteration can be done for both therapeutic reasons or for cosmetic reasons (Sofer, 1991). Therapeutic Gene Manipulation Therapeutic genetic manipulation is preformed by doctors to prevent diseases that the baby is carrying. The baby is tested by screening the embryo for any possible unknown diseases. Sometimes the PGD or preimplantation genetic diagnosis technique is used for this (Biotechnology special focus). The main diseases PGD is used to test for in babies are Hunntingtons disease, Tay-sacks, Alzheimers, Familia cancers, Sickle Cell disease, Hemophilia, Neurofibromatosis, Fanconis Anemia, Cystic fibrosis and most recently, Downs Syndrome (Hooray for designer babies, 2002). This technique involves removing the unfertilized egg from the female, mating it with a sperm and then testing it for diseases. If all the diseases are absent, the fertilized egg is planted into the mothers uterus to develop into a baby. Some other unpredictable diseases may also be carried in the babys chromosomes. Chromosome carrying diseases and disorders include: miscarriage of the baby, physical birth defects or down synd rome (Biotechnology special focus). Some babies may also be at high risk of disease because of their family history. The doctor can go in and alter the disease carrying gene and end it for good. This biotechnology splices the gene from one species of plant or animal and transfer it into another species to create various new varieties of plants that has a new characteristics that does not occur naturally.(Whittaker, 2013). Biotechnology involves alteration of DNA by introducing new DNA artificially that result in to genetically modified organism. The option of skin, eye, and hair color for the baby was so readily available for a price. This practice began raising some questions because it was becoming unethical. All Parents want their child to be of perfect health and to in a sense look perfect, but this is not reality. This process would be very similar to injecting a human with small pox to make the body resistant to contracting the virus externally. ââ¬Å"The purpose is to alter the genetic code in plants and animals to make them more productive or resistant to pests or farming techniques, like being doused with chemicals that would ordinarily kill themâ⬠(GMOs: The Pros Cons of Genetically Modified Food). The technology is used in agriculture, medicine and food sciences. Various kinds of genetic alterations are possible which include the inserting of genes of one specie to another to get the required traits and the unwanted traits can be removed by excluding the gene of that specific trait (Efsa, 2015). Genetic engineering is altering a personââ¬â¢s genes to get a more dominate trait. Some people believe that our world would better off if humans could be more intelligent, run faster, grow taller, and have more of a designer personality and physical appearance. For example, if a pregnant mother finds out her child is going to have Down Syndrome, genetic engineering canbe used to help fix the mutated gene. Although genetic engineering can fix minor problems, it can also causeRead MoreGeneral Science and GATTACA1001 Words à |à 5 Pagespo llution. GATTACA (1997) is a science fiction movie where oneââ¬â¢s capabilities are determined by their genes since birth. Vincent Freeman is displayed as the main character where he needs to overcome his weaknesses through hard work and consistent determination to achieve his goals at Gattaca Space Academy. Alterations of genetics play a major role in the movie where only ones with flawless genes can achieve their dream career and ââ¬Ëgenoismââ¬â¢ became a new form of inequity. Many crops have been subject to these genetic modifications such as: alfalfa, cotton, flax, rice, tobacco, tomatoes, and wheat. Many people are on various sides of the spectrum of being for the alteration of these crops or strongly against it. Personally, I am against the use of genetically modified crops because of the denaturing of a natural process, the lack of economic benefit, and the risk of allergic reactions in some of the population. The DNA is transferred into the organism in question and it results into the formation of two different types of GMOs (transgenic and cisgenic) based on the origin of DNA being used. Transgenic organisms are formed by inducing exogenous genes called transgenes in an organism. In the process of cisgenesis or the creation of cisgenic organisms, the genes are transferred between organisms that areRead MoreThe Complicated Biology of Breast Cancer977 Words à |à 4 Pagesabout breast cancer, I decided to use my knowledge and research to guide you through the more complicated biological side of breast cancer. It is clear that cancer is heterogeneous and mutation is often, and the traditional way to classify tumor types is insufficient. It is, for this reason, we are studying the genetic alteration for each cancer, with the goal of not only identifying the tumor cell type accurately but also trying to prevent and correct this type of mutation.
