The Pros and Cons of Gene Alteration Essay - 2344 Words
The Pros and Cons of Gene Alteration Abstract A new epidemic in human reproduction is slowly sweeping the earth, and it is known as human gene alteration. It gives parents the ability to decide their babies sex, hair color, or even eye color. Creating these so called designer babies seems like the perfect way to have the child you have always dreamed of. But is this a moral way to go about reproduction? Is it fair to these children to mess with their genes just for your own satisfaction of having the perfect baby? Gene alteration can also be used in other more beneficial ways. One being to prevent and weed out disease that effects an unborn child. Gene alteration can be very beneficial, but only if used in the right way such asâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This method enables the parents of a fetus to pretty much control everything that goes on in a babys development in the womb. Gene alteration can be done for both therapeutic reasons or for cosmetic reasons (Sofer, 1991). Therapeutic Gene Manipulation Therapeutic genetic manipulation is preformed by doctors to prevent diseases that the baby is carrying. The baby is tested by screening the embryo for any possible unknown diseases. Sometimes the PGD or preimplantation genetic diagnosis technique is used for this (Biotechnology special focus). The main diseases PGD is used to test for in babies are Hunntingtons disease, Tay-sacks, Alzheimers, Familia cancers, Sickle Cell disease, Hemophilia, Neurofibromatosis, Fanconis Anemia, Cystic fibrosis and most recently, Downs Syndrome (Hooray for designer babies, 2002). This technique involves removing the unfertilized egg from the female, mating it with a sperm and then testing it for diseases. If all the diseases are absent, the fertilized egg is planted into the mothers uterus to develop into a baby. Some other unpredictable diseases may also be carried in the babys chromosomes. Chromosome carrying diseases and disorders include: miscarriage of the baby, physical birth defects or down synd rome (Biotechnology special focus). Some babies may also be at high risk of disease because of their family history. The doctor can go in and alter the disease carrying gene and end it for good. Cultural Difference Free Essays
In the past, I had interviewed several Iraqi locals that I worked with during my time in their country. The awareness of cultural rules that were presented for us to provide integration into their country was lacking in many areas, including the nonverbal rules that varied greatly from the more ââ¬Å"freeâ⬠American style. First, the shaking of hands, which in America is almost always considered the norm for meeting and greeting. We will write a custom essay sample on Cultural Difference or any similar topic only for you Order Now While there are no differences in the actual contact, there is not the immediate shaking of hands that occurs in American society. Hand shaking will usually only occur, initially, amongst leaders or spokesmen for a group. This is also done more as an understanding; similar to the custom of ââ¬Å"shaking on itâ⬠that is less commonplace in todayââ¬â¢s society. Another custom in America is the constant eye contact, or staring, that occurs as an indication of attention being provided to the speaker. In Iraq, eye contact is acceptable amongst two individuals during private conversation, but the requirement to maintain eye contact does not extend beyond. It is considered a requirement that activity continue during conversation, and it is not rude for one person to talk constantly while others are working and not making any verbal or nonverbal confirmations that they are listening. A third interesting custom in Iraq is that of time. I worked with a crew of 10 men who were from the local village and came to work each day for the Army. These 10 explained that time is a definite in their culture. If someone says they will do something, it will either include a time or not, as opposed to Americans who indicate ââ¬Å"maybe, soon or sometime. This definitive culture is because of religious tenets that dictate when things will occur in their country. Meal times occur at a given interval, prayer times also, while work does not require certain times to be performed. The difference with work hours is the establishment of verbal contracts, as we label the action, in which times are specified, and those are the times. Working past this time is a personal choice, and those that do not put in ââ¬Å"overtimeâ⬠are in no way chastised or considered lazy. The same standard is held regarding start times, and they will be an hour early if there is any indication that arriving at their agreed location will delay them working. This level of personal dedication to their culture, and their willingness to self-regulate their behaviors borders on fanaticism, by American standards, yet provides the same group benefits to them that we American individuals seek for ourselves. i. e. No one gets ââ¬Å"sold for a goatâ⬠because someone will provide everyone the goat. Adler, Rosenfeld and Proctor II. Interplay: The Process of Interpersonal Communication, 11th ed.
